Americana
Fall 2023
Americana is the culmination of four smaller booklets exploring American Identity and how the American Dream shifts over generations of one family’s lineage. In traveling across Ohio, collecting images and stories from any relative who was willing to sit down with me, I discovered how much environment and time period affects the ways in which people live, think, and act. While small towns in red states tend to get bad press regarding their political ideology willingness to express those who are “othered,” I ended up finding much to celebrate about small town America and the people who reside there. This book is a critique of American identity and ideology, but also a love letter to the place in which I was raised. The dichotomy of these two objectives creates for an additional level of intrigue as throughout the books conception I navigate my own feelings about American ideals past and present.
